Typhoons and tropical storms kill dozens of people each year in Vietnam. Here is a chronology of recent major disasters:

2009

– September 29: Typhoon Ketsana strikes south of Danang, killing at least 38 people and leaving 10 missing

2008

– September: Typhoon Hagupit kills at least 41 people in northern Vietnam

2007

– October: At least 58 die when Typhoon Lekima hits northern and central Vietnam

2006

– December: Tropical Storm Durian kills at least 70 in the country's south

– October: Typhoon Xangsane leaves more than 70 dead in central Vietnam

– May: Typhoon Chanchu kills 21 Vietnamese fishermen while 220 of their countrymen are missing and presumed dead in waters off Taiwan and China

2005

– September: In northern Vietnam, Typhoon Damrey kills 63 people
