Tropical storm Andres churned past beach resorts up Mexico's southwest Pacific coast on Monday as forecasters issued a warning and said it could grow into a hurricane.

Tropical storm Andres churned past beach resorts up Mexico's southwest Pacific coast on Monday as forecasters issued a warning and said it could grow into a hurricane.

Mexico's weather service declared a phase four alert, advising boats to take precautions, with large waves and rain expected.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said the storm was about 120 miles (195 kilometers) south of the beach resort of Zihuatanejo, moving northwest at around five miles (7 km) per hour.

The storm packed sustained winds of around 50 miles per hour with higher gusts, the NHC said in its latest bulletin.

"Some strengthening is forecast during the next 24 hours and Andres could become a hurricane tomorrow," the NHC said.
