Townsend Oil and Propane has announced the introduction and general availability of BioPureTM, a clean burning alternative to petroleum-based fuel oil made from domestic, renewable sources of energy.

BioPure is a blend of traditional home heating oil and between two and five percent of biofuel made from a variety of agricultural and vegetable feed stocks including soybeans. Since BioPure is produced from renewable resources, it reduces dependence on foreign oil, enhances energy security in the United States, contributes to the domestic economy and improves the environment.

Once in place with Townsend's 12,000 customers in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, BioPure will save the nation the equivalent of 200,000 gallons of fuel oil in its first year alone.

"Support for the availability of alternative fuels for home heating is not just an economic development issue, it is also an environmental issue," said Jim Townsend, CEO, Townsend Oil and Propane.

"By proactively offering consumers in the region more options in adopting renewable sources of energy, we create incentives that can help to cut our energy costs, improve air quality and reduce our dependence on foreign oil. We are making BioPure immediately available to all of our current customers and new ones as well."

Townsend's introduction of BioPure for heating comes more than a year ahead of the new biofuels mandate in Massachusetts for both home heating oil and transportation diesel.

Signed into by Gov. Deval Patrick in July 2008, the Clean Energy Biofuels Act establishes a timetable for a gradual transition to biofuels. In addition, the federal government is implementing President Obama's plan of creating incentives that make renewable energy available and affordable to the American public.

"From an industry point of view, Townsend Oil and Propane is certainly taking a leadership role in promoting biofuels for home heating oil customers," said Michael Ferrante, president of the Massachusetts Oilheat Council, the state trade association for the industry.

"Jim's company is clearly ahead of the curve in helping to reshape the home heating oil industry in our state," Ferrante added.

Domestically produced, using organically-based feed stocks, BioPure will help our nation reduce the use of fossil fuels, enhance energy security, assist our nation's farmers and improve the environment. Among the benefits of BioPure:

+ BioPure is extremely clean burning with fewer emissions to the environment;

+ BioPure costs the same as "regular" heating oil;

+ BioPure helps to lubricate heating system parts more thoroughly and efficiently, which can help reduce the number of service calls needed annually and adding to a heating system's longevity; and

+ BioPure requires no boiler, furnace, burner or tank modifications, nor does if affect any customer service contracts or equipment warranties.

Townsend's BioPure is BQ-9000 certified, which meets ASTM D6751 quality and audit standards for companies engaged in producing, distributing and marketing blended biofuels. In addition to BioPure, Townsend provides Propane delivery and heating and cooling services, as well as diesel and gasoline.

Townsend also offers several innovative ways to help its customers use less and save more – such as better managing energy costs with its Intelli-Pay program, and receiving customized energy-saving solutions from its team of trained Conservation Specialists.
