Russia on Friday welcomed North Korea's avowal of the need to resume six-party nuclear talks as a step in the right direction, the Interfax news agency quoted a Russian foreign ministry source as saying.
"If the report on North Korea's readiness to return to the six-party talks is true, then this would be a step in the right direction by Pyongyang," the ministry source said.
Earlier Friday North Korea said it had reached a "common understanding" with the United States on the need to resume stalled disarmament talks, after a three-day visit by President Barack Obama's envoy to Pyongyang.
A spokesman for the North's foreign ministry said Pyongyang would cooperate with Washington to "narrow down remaining differences".
Moscow supports bilateral talks between the United States and North Korea and is "ready to contribute to them in any way possible", the Russian foreign ministry source said, according to Interfax.
Russia is a participant in the six-nation nuclear negotiations with the United States, North Korea, South Korea, China and Japan.
