Around 1,000 demonstrators held a protest march in Honduras' capital Thursday demanding justice over the murder of a high-profile indigenous environmental activist, Berta Caceres, who was slain last month.
The rally was kept from the presidential palace by ranks of riot police.
Organizers, who had held meetings Wednesday on Caceres' murder, said they would continue her struggle against big mining companies and dams that threaten indigenous communities.
Caceres, 45, was shot to death at her home in La Esperanza, northwest of the capital Tegucigalpa, on March 3 by two masked gunmen. Her funeral drew thousands of mourners.
The mother of four had been the head of the Civic Council of Indigenous and People's Organizations, and was widely respected throughout Central America for persevering in her activism despite many death threats.
So far, Honduran authorities have made no arrests in her murder nor identified any suspects.
