Pakistan's army chief General Ashfaq Kayani on Thursday toured frontlines in the northwest Swat valley, where his troops are battling against Taliban militants, the military said.
The army chief of staff met field commanders and troops, saw "firsthand certain operations being carried out against the militants" and reiterated his resolve to defeat the extremists, the armed forces said in a statement.
It was Kayani's first reported visit to the area, which has been ripped apart by a nearly two-year Taliban insurgency to enforce sharia law, since the military launched a massive operation in the district last week.
Pakistani ground and air forces are battling against the Taliban in the scenic mountainous district to "eliminate" armed fighters who advanced within 100 kilometres (60 miles) of the capital Islamabad.
