AREVA NP will update the reactor protection system of the Paks nuclear power plant* 4 units together with its Hungarian consortium partner evopro systems engineering Kft.
The scope of the contract includes a comprehensive software update of the existing digital safety instrumentation and control (IC) system that AREVA NP had implemented as a replacement between 1999 and 2002. The current agreement covers all activities from planning up to on-site testing and also comprises the modernization of maintenance and test equipment. The project shall be completed in 2019.
"This contract proves that AREVA NP's TELEPERM XS platform supports long-term operation, enhances plant safety and availability and protects investments in the long run. The update project at Paks will ease future maintainability and contributes to the intended life time extension at the site", said Martin Winkler, Vice President Marketing and Sales at AREVA NP's IC Business Unit.
AREVA NP modernizes IC systems in installed fleets of virtually all reactor designs and equips both its own new build reactors and non-AREVA OEM reactor projects. The company has implemented safety IC systems in more than 80 plants in 17 countries.
The Paks nuclear power plant comprises of 4 units with pressurized water reactors with an installed net capacity of 500 megawatt each.
Coatings for nuclear fuel preventing explosions in reactors, developed at TPU
Physicists from Tomsk Polytechnic University are creating protective titanium nitride-based coatings for shells of fuel elements (fuel rods) of nuclear reactors. Such shells can significantly reduce hydrogenation of containers in which nuclear fuel is placed, extend their service life and protect reactor from explosion like at the Fukusima radiation disaster.
"In reactors nuclear fuel is l … read more
