British explosive experts gave the all clear Tuesday after a suspected bomb alert at a major Royal Air Force base in southwest England, the Ministry of Defence said.
Explosive experts said no explosive device was found after an investigation at RAF Lyneham, where many of the bodies of British soldiers killed in Afghanistan are returned, the ministry said.
"A suspected IED (Improvised Explosive Device) has been discovered at RAF Lyneham," a spokesman said earlier. "An EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) team are on site and currently working to make the area safe."
An official said the alarm was raised when sniffer dogs reacted to explosive residue on a vehicle on the perimeter of the base, which is home to four RAF transport squadrons flying C-130 Hercules.
The vehicle was entering the base when the dogs reacted, reports said.
No further details were given.
