Telecoms Sans Frontieres signed a contract with the European Commission's Humanitarian Aid department (ECHO) to carry out an international training program in emergency telecommunications.

During this one year program, 40 humanitarian organizations in the regions of Central America, the Caribbean and South-East Asia will be trained to respond to emergency communication issues in crisis zones.

During a five day intensive course and a three day follow up session, participating organizations will acquire the skills and know-how required to establish quick and reliable internet connections, phone and fax lines in the field.

TSF experts will train participants how to use and trouble-shoot various equipment and help each organization find the most adapted and cost-effective solution to meet their needs.

The knowledge and skills acquired during the training will help the emergency responders ensure the security of their teams in the field and enable greater coordination of relief efforts.

In addition to the training sessions, a web portal is being developed to provide important information and technical advice as well as to keep partners updated on evolutions in telecommunications technology. The objective is to build a network of humanitarian professionals trained in emergency telecoms, able to coordinate their efforts and increase the impact of emergency response.

This project is part of a European Commission decision aimed at improving the quality and effectiveness of humanitarian actions delivered by non-governmental humanitarian organizations.

True to the objectives of this decision, the TSF training program will help to strengthen the preparedness and response capacity of NGOs as well as to reinforce coordination among the humanitarian community.
