Taiwan is seeking to procure Sikorsky MH-60R Seahawk anti-submarine helicopters from the United States, the Taiwanese Navy's Chief of Staff said.
Vice Adm. Hsiao Wei-ming made the disclosure Thursday while appearing before the legislature's Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee.
"We plan to purchase 10 MH-60R Seahawk helicopters," the China News Agency quoted the admiral.
The MH-60R is the U.S. Navy's prime anti-submarine helicopter. It is equipped with dipping sonar, torpedoes and machine guns. It has a speed of 168 miles per hour and range of 450 nautical miles.
The news agency said the MH-60Rs would replace the country's MD 500 helicopters.
The report did not indicate whether or not Taiwan has officially asked the United States for the sale of the aircraft.
