The Campaign for an Energy-Efficient America, a national coalition of more than 75 leading businesses, industry associations, faith organizations and environmental groups, has released this statement following the Senate markup of the renewable electricity standard (RES):

"The amendments have failed to strengthen energy efficiency standards and weakened an already meager renewable electricity standard that will create no new clean energy jobs or consumer savings for American consumers.

"While we commend the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee for addressing this important topic and applaud the Senators who emphasized the importance of energy efficiency in the debate, especially Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ), we are left with an extremely watered-down proposal that will do little to help transition our country to a clean energy economy.

"This provision needs fundamental improvement on the Senate floor.

"Recent analysis shows that a strong energy efficiency resource standard could create $170 billion in savings for consumers and business owners and create 222,000 new jobs. Moving forward, we encourage all Senators to ensure energy efficiency is a core component of any final climate and energy bill passed by Congress."
