Russia must press on with a programme to build 26 new nuclear power stations despite the severe economic crisis affecting the country, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday.

"We must build 26 power stations," Putin told a government meeting on developing Russia's nuclear energy potential, Interfax news agency reported.

"Between now and 2030, the share of nuclear power in total energy production must reach 25-30 percent" from the current figure of 16 percent, he added.

The once-buoyant Russian economy has been hit hard by a sharp drop in the price of oil and metals, its main exports, as well as billions of dollars of capital outflows sparked by the global financial crisis.
