Mining giant Rio Tinto Tuesday postponed this month's Melbourne annual general meeting after top bosses were stranded in London by the ash cloud which has paralysed air travel.
Chairman Jan du Plessis, chief executive Tom Albanese and other senior directors are all unable to travel, forcing the April 22 meeting to be put off for more than a month until May 26, a statement said.
"In light of the unprecedented travel restrictions in Europe, it is not possible for the chairman, chief executive or other Rio Tinto directors to arrive in Melbourne in sufficient time," it said.
The dual-listed Anglo-Australian company's chiefs were in London after attending last week's annual general meeting there.
Volcanic ash from Iceland has frozen flights in parts of northern Europe for nearly a week, throwing travel plans into chaos for millions of tourists and business people and causing heavy economic losses.
