Floods and a cyclone have killed four children in eastern Indonesia and forced hundreds of people to flee their homes, a local official said Tuesday.
"Three school children were swept away by flash floods as they were on the way back home from school," Sentianus Nedi, head of the social affairs office in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara province, told reporters.
"Another boy in a different subdistrict was killed when his school building collapsed after a cyclone," he said, adding that the incident took place early Monday when the school was almost deserted.
At least 400 people were forced to take refuge in emergency shelters after three days of heavy rains forced them to flee their homes and another 500 were cut off by the floods, he said.
Landslides and flooding are common in Indonesia during the rainy season, which peaks between December and February.
