China plans to spend five billion dollars on reconstruction work in areas devastated by a deadly earthquake in April, the government said Sunday.
A 6.9-magnitude quake struck Yushu county, a largely ethnically Tibetan area in Qinghai province in a remote part of the country's northwest on April 14, killing nearly 2,700 people and flattening thousands of homes.
The 32 billion yuan will come from the central budget, with further funding from the Qinghai authorities as well as donations from businesses and individuals, a statement on the central government website said.
The main construction work should be finished in three years, the statement said, and the government will cut taxes for companies and financial institutions locally to help job creation and building work.
