China has donated 700,000 dollars to upgrade Cuba's earthquake detection system, state news agency AIN said Tuesday.
The funds will be put toward revamped seismometers, radio communication technology and mobile stations to monitor earthquake activity, the agency said.
"The new equipment will automatically determine the location and magnitude of each seismic event" on the island, Bladimir Moreno, director of the National Seismological Research Center, told AIN. Quakes mainly affect the Caribbean island's mountainous southeast.
China and Cuba are key political and economic allies, with the rising Asian giant Havana's second largest trading partner and an important source of credit for the Americas' only communist regime.
