Siemens secures trains deal in China

German engineering giant Siemens said on Tuesday it had won an order worth more than 334 million euros (459 million dollars) to build 500 electric freight trains for China's railways.

German engineering giant Siemens said on Tuesday it had won an order worth more than 334 million euros (459 million dollars) to build 500 electric freight trains for China's railways.

Siemens' Transportation System unit will build the powerful locomotives with its Chinese partner CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co (ZELC).

"These will be the most powerful locomotives in the world, with 50 percent more traction than European locomotives," Siemens said in a statement.

The first locomotives are scheduled to go into service at the start of 2009.
