Producing fusion fuel without mercury may open path to clean energy

BODY TEXT: A longstanding barrier to the production of nuclear fusion fuel may have been overcome, as researchers from ETH Zurich and Texas A and M University have unveiled a method for isolating lithium-6 without using toxic mercury. Their approach could enable scalable production of this critical isotope, essential for nuclear fusion, without the environmental hazards that previously led to a U.S. ban.
