France OKs work to resume on nuclear reactor
Paris (AFP) June 19, 2008 France's nuclear safety authority ASN flashed a green light Thursday for construction to resume at the site of the third-generation European Pressurised Water Reactor in Flamanville. Work had been halted on June 21 after "anomalies" were detected at the facility, situated alongside two older reactors built in the 1980s on the English Channel in Lower Normandy. In a statement, ASN said cement-pouring could resume after the French state electicity utility EDF set out a "plan of action" that included beefed-up technical inspections and monthly progress reports. The reactor is the second of its kind under construction in Europe, after on in Finland that has experienced repeated major delays linked to the quality of concrete used. Flamanville -- said by EDF to cost 3.3 billion euros (5.1 billion dollars) -- is to be commissioned in 2012.
