Close nuclear plants, says Spanish govt think tank
Madrid (AFP) May 20, 2009 A think tank of Spain's governing Socialist Party Wednesday called for all of the country's nuclear plants to be closed by 2050, when it said all energy sources should be renewable. The Ideas Foundation said Spain should be "free of nuclear energy in 2050" and have "100-percent renewable energy." "Renewable energies could replace current nuclear production in less than a decade," the experts said in the report. Spain currently has six nuclear power plants, which produce around a quarter of the country's electricity.
