Belarus wants Russian loan for nuclear plant: reports
Minsk (AFP) May 28, 2009 Belarus is seeking a 9.0-billion-dollar (6.5-billion-euro) loan from Russia to build a nuclear power station, Russia's finance minister was quoted as saying by Russian news agencies on Thursday. "Belarus is asking Russia for nine billion dollars in credit to build a nuclear power station," the minister, Alexei Kudrin, was quoted as saying during talks here. "We have the request from the Belarussian government and are examining it. "To begin providing credit we need to be sure this station will be built, that there will be a definite sales market for the electrical energy and that a tariff price is set that allows for the credit to be paid off," Kudrin said as he accompanied Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin at the talks. Russia has regularly bailed out its western ex-Soviet neighbour Belarus with loans, which Minsk has in turn often needed to pay for Russian energy supplies.
