Areva nuclear plant faces fresh delay

Helsinki (AFP) Oct 15, 2009
Finnish electric firm TVO said Thursday that the opening of a reactor being built for the company by French nuclear giant Areva and Germany's Siemens could face further delay.

The plant in Olkiluoto, western Finland, has fallen more than three years behind its original schedule and the parties have blamed each other for delays and ballooning costs.

"According to the latest progress report published by suppliers Areva-Siemens, TVO estimates that the reactor's opening could be pushed back beyond June 2012, which is the current delay confirmed by the suppliers," said TVO in a statement.

"These accumulated delays are now affecting the start of installation and building works," added project director Jouni Silvennoinen in the statement.

TVO was cooperating with the suppliers on the works, "but at the same time we will not accept any compromise on security and quality requirements; the reactor will be safe and technologically advanced," he added.

Last month Areva reported its January-June net profit fell 79 percent to 161 million euros (235 million dollars) due to a charge of 550 million euros it had to take for more delays in Olkiluoto.
